For more than 25 years, the Carbine Club of Hong Kong has been promoting sport and our values of community and fellowship in Hong Kong though a series of high quality speaker lunches that are timed to coincide with three of Hong Kong’s premier sporting events. 

 

Each April, we kick off the Carbine Club season and the Rugby 7s weekend with our Hong Kong Rugby 7s Lunch.  The Hong Kong Rugby 7s attracts the best 7s teams in the world and delivers the biggest crowd of the World 7s calendar.  The same is true of the Carbine Club Rugby 7s lunch which regularly attracts a crowd of over 500 guests.  Some of the greats of the game have entertained the Hong Kong crowd including Martin Johnson, Morne Du Plessis, Hugo Porta, Jason Leonard, Sean Fitzpatrick and David Campese.  The recent addition of a comedian to the program has seen some members asking for a table further away from the stage!  In delivering on our commitment to community, the Rugby 7s lunch is a fundraising vehicle for the Hong Kong Rugby Union Community Foundation who use funds raised at the lunch for the development and advancement of Rugby in Hong Kong.

 

Our next lunch of the Hong Kong season is the International Cricket Luncheon which is held in September and traditionally, preceded the Hong Kong International Cricket 6s competition.  The Cricket Lunch has seen a long line of cricketing royalty entertain the Hong Kong audience with speakers such as the late Fred Trueman, Doug Walters, Derek Underwood, Paul Sheahan, Freddie Flintoff, Graham Gooch and Henry Bloefeld.  We augment royalty with some of cricket’s great characters such as Damien Fleming, Steve Harmison, Tony Cottee, Wayne Philips (twice), Rodney Hogg, Foxy Fowler and Geoff Miller to name but a few.  Cricket Hong Kong benefits from the lunch with funds raised at the event donated to CHK for the ongoing development of cricket and the cricketing community in Hong Kong.

 

We round out our year with our International Racing Luncheon.  The event is timed to coincide with, the Hong Kong Jockey Club's Hong Kong International Race meeting held on the second Sunday of December each year.  The event attracts the cream of world’s thoroughbreds to Shatin for a spectacular day of racing.  On the Friday preceding the races, the Carbine Club of Hong Kong hosts an international crowd of HKJC luminaries, owners, trainers and racing enthusiasts at the Grand Hyatt.  Members and their guests have been entertained by some of the leading lights in the industry such as the Horse Whisperer, Monty Roberts and legendary jockeys Gary Stevens and, Malcolm Johnson.  The lunch has become an integral part of the Hong Kong Jockey Club’s events during International Race week and is also held to benefit the Club’s designated event charity Riding for the Disabled Hong Kong.
